Art in Cork Prison

This talk will outline the establishment of education generally and art in particular in the prison service. It will trace the expansion of the service and, by looking at artwork done over the years, it will explore the quality and standards achieved. Also discussed will be the benefits to the students from participation in creative artistic activities.

Presenters:
Maria H. Magee – Artist, Art Therapist and Art Teacher working in Cork Prison since 1982 will
co ordinate the presentation.
Hugh Lorrigan – Artist, lecturer in the CIT Crawford College of Art and Design and Ceramic
Teacher in Cork Prison will outline the work done in Ceramics, which make up a vital section of the creative curriculum.  
Helle Helsner –Artist and Lecturer in the CIT Crawford College of Art and Design will present
work done in a workshop in Cork Prison when she came in as one of the panel on the Artists
in Prison Scheme, which is run by the Arts Council.
